Sports and Leisure Provision in Attleborough

Attleborough Town Council, Breckland District Council and Attleborough High School, are hosting an open meeting on Thursday 24 January at 7.30pm at Attleborough High School. The aim is to improve sporting opportunities for people in the town and surrounding areas. The intention is to co-ordinate efforts, engage with local people, improve access to facilities, and maximise opportunities for people to take part in sport.

Town Clerk, Hilary Elias, explained, “We expect a good many people to attend, and to enable people to contribute we anticipate initial presentations, followed by group work and subsequent feedback.  We hope to gain a better understanding of local sporting needs, consider the need for new and improved facilities, and develop some sort of local sports forum, network or working group which will take matters forward.  We expect a lively debate as there are a number of sporting organisations within the town who are keen to see their ideas promoted.  We would be disappointed if local clubs and organisations did not take this opportunity to express their views, but of course there will need to be a rational appraisal of what is possible, and provides best value for money for the town.

Any group tasked with developing ideas after the meeting would also be expected to develop an achievable action plan”.
If you would like to attend you would be most welcome.

Attleborough Town Council sets its precept for 2008 – 2009

During a full Council Meeting held on 3 December 2008 Attleborough Town Councillors unanimously voted to increase the precept to £222,171 for the financial year April 2008 – March 2009.

Before making the decision Councillors looked at the following features: the benefits of the town having a full-time qualified Town Clerk with adequate support, which would help bring much needed investment into the Town; emergency works being carried out on the Town Hall premises together with improvements to the internal lighting arrangements; an expanding Attleborough In Bloom project; and the existing Christmas lights display being maintained; Another benefit to the Town was that the weekly Town Market, which had been taken over by the Town Council, was now being run profitably and bringing in additional revenue.

Attleborough is rapidly expanding and needs capital expenditure on its infrastructure, yet still lags well behind other Breckland and South Norfolk towns when comparing precept levels, even when taking this planned increase into account.  The increase of £35,931 on the previous year represents a rise of 19.2% and will mean that Band D households in Attleborough will be paying an extra at £10.36 per annum (86p a month, or 20p per week).

Although at first sight the increase in percentage terms appears high, this is because the town has a low starting base-point. The Town Council is a committed group of members who work very hard to give good value to the people of the Town.  At the meeting, and before the Town Council had chance to outline its proposals, a Breckland Councillor voiced his concerns at the size of the percentage increase.  However, the £222,171 represents good value when compared to the amount Breckland District Council has paid out to its Chief Executives in the last 12 months.

Attleborough is a thriving, vibrant town and this precept will ensure that the Town Council can continue its work for the people of the town and improve it even further.

Alcohol Ban in Public Places

The alcohol ban in public spaces for Attleborough is well on track and Councillors are trying to get this operational before the New Year. A group of Attleborough Town Councillors met with Attleborough based police officers last week to discuss the next stages.

Over the next few weeks various organisations, groups, buinesses and the general pulblic will be consulted and be able to give their opinions and judgements about the introduction of the ban. The Council will also visit all licensee's in the Town to discuss the proposals and a proposal will be forwarded to Breckland District Council. The local police are working closely with the Town Council and 100% behind this ban .Both the Town council and Police will be pulling out all the stops to have the ban in place by the end of this year.

If local residents have any comments they would like to add regarding this ban they are urged to write directly to the Attleborough Town Clerk @ the Town Hall by 31st October
