Attleborough Town Twinning
Association
Twinning Association celebrates practical
links
As regular readers will know, one of the aims of
the Twinning Association is to foster opportunities for
work experience in the twin communities of Nueil-les-Aubiers
and Attleborough. Over
the years a number of placements have been successfully organised
where families in Attleborough and the surrounding area have
hosted young people looking for work and life experience a little
different from their own backgrounds. A current example
is a young French student from Nueil-les-Aubiers who is looking
to improve her English studies, which she has been pursuing
since 2000 by working as an au pair in Attleborough. Mary
Ridgway, the Twinning Association Secretary, said “This
could be an ideal opportunity for a local family with young
children to not only assist Laura but to create a special dimension
for their own children.”
In the lead up to a return visit by our friends from Nueil-les-Aubiers
in May 2009, the Association Committee is planning to hold a
Sausage and Mash Supper and Beetle Drive during October. Further
details will be available at a later date but, in the meantime,
please make a note in your diaries for Saturday 18 October!
If anyone is interested in offering Laura a place as an au
pair please contact Mary Ridgway on 01953 455995 or e-mail maryandgeorge@easynet.co.uk
for further details.

Attleborough Town Council Boost
For Sports Forum
The Attleborough Sports and Recreation
Forum, have been boosted by a £1,000 donation from Attleborough
Town Council. The donation is great news for the campaign and
it is hoped that Breckland District Council will be able to match
the Town Council's contribution.
This will enable the Forum to
push ahead with the planned surveys and reports necessary
in order to apply for further funding. This is a good start and
the Forum would like to thank the Town Council for their
generosity in helping to get the ball rolling. |

Attleborough
Sports & Recreation Forum.
Following the
public meeting held in January about the lack of sports and
recreational facilities in the Town a group was formed called
Attleborough Sports and Recreation Forum and they have just
held their second successful meeting earlier this month.
The group have been busy gathering facts and figures and
are hoping to survey every household in the Town in the near
future regarding their wants and needs in the way of recreational
facilities, be it sport based or other non-sport based leisure
activities - whatever you want to do the Forum wants to hear
about it. They have been drafting a constitution which it
is hoped will be adopted at the group's first AGM which will
be held on 12 June 2008 in the Town Hall at 7.30 p.m., when
it will also elect its officers. At the AGM the group hopes
to give a presentation of its findings so far to representatives
from local clubs and organisations so they can get a feel
of what the group are hoping to achieve.

Town Council Annual
Assembly 2008
The Annual
Assembly is a meeting of the electors of the parish of Attleborough,
rather than a Town Council meeting. It
is an opportunity for electors to express their views publicly,
to discuss parish business and even pass resolutions by majority
vote, although the resolutions are not binding on the Town
Council. Representatives of the Police, the Planning
Authority and the District & County Council are invited
to answer electors’ questions, and the Chair of the
Town Council chairs the meeting. Members of the
public who are not on the electoral roll for the parish may
attend, but may not take part in the proceedings.
Traditionally
the business transacted at a parish meeting is to request
provision of allotments and to hear the presentation for
the accounts for the local charities. Other items
may be raised from the floor. In Attleborough the Town
Council already provides allotments, and the Chair of the
Trustees of Attleborough Charities presents the accounts
to the public. The Town Council will also discuss items
raised at the Annual Assembly at its next Council meeting.
Last
year, for the first time, local organisations were invited
to send a representative to man a small table in the Bar
Area at the Town Hall as a showcase for their group’s
activities. This was very popular and will be repeated
again this year. Also the Attleborough Awards were
instigated by the then Mayor Jeremy Burton, and the current
Mayor, Vera Dale, is keen to continue this. If you
wish to nominate a person or an organisation that benefits
the local community, or puts in that extra effort for the
good of Attleborough, then contact the Clerk’s office
on 01953 456194, or pick up a nomination form (on the back
of the newsletter) from the Tourist Office in the Town Hall. There
will be an individual award, a group award and an overall
winner.
Don’t miss this year’s Annual Town Assembly
on Monday 3 March in the Town Hall. The doors open
at 6pm so you can see what organisations have to offer in
Attleborough, and the business meeting begins at 7pm. Come
and have your say!
Attleborough Town Hall
Attleborough town hall was probably built in the seventeen hundreds, starting
life as a manor house. Later it was used for various businesses, and has
been a furniture warehouse, brush factory, post office and restaurant in its
time. It now houses the administration offices of the town council, the
cab and friends & neighbours and an accountancy firm, and is a popular venue
for social and business functions.
The town hall is, of course, also where your town council meets, with full council
meetings at 7pm on the first working monday of the month (except for march when
the annual town assembly is held, and the council meets the following week). Members
of the public are welcome to attend all meetings of the council and its committees
and two periods of public participation are set aside for residents to make their
views known to their councillors.
We offer a wide range of facilities in an historic and atmospheric setting. The
premises are fully furnished and air-conditioned, comprising a large function
room with dance floor, large licensed bar room, spacious kitchen and a committee
room, with free parking nearby. We are able to hold wedding
receptions, parties, conferences, meetings, club activities, aerobics and dancing.
To book the hall please contact julie in the clerk’s office from 10am -2pm
mondays – thursdays or 10am – 12 noon on fridays.
Tel: 01953 456194 or e-mail atcclerk@tiscali.co.uk
We look forward to seeing you in attleborough town hall.

For
their December meeting members celebrated Christmas with
a fish and chips meal at the Francis Room. There were desserts
to follow and it all seemed to be very much enjoyed. Following
the meal there was entertainment by Colin, Colleen and David
from ‘Three’s company’. The programme
of music and songs was selected on an alphabetical theme
----W,X,Y,Z. it was light-hearted entertainment with humorous
excerpts together with a musical quiz. Members were quick
to guess the countries and places when David played just
a few notes of songs with place names in them. The President,
Mrs. B. Chenery, thanked the group for making it a very pleasant
evening.
The cup for gaining most points In the monthly competitions
during the year were presented to Mrs. J. Fincham. Mrs. P.
Lee won the cup for flower of the month competitions. Each
member brought a wrapped gift and so no-one went home empty
handed. A collection was made for East Coast Truckers- this
was instead of exchanging Christmas cards.

Sports and Leisure Provision
in Attleborough
Attleborough Town Council, Breckland District Council
and Attleborough High School, are hosting an open meeting on
Thursday 24 January at 7.30pm at Attleborough High School. The
aim is to improve sporting opportunities for people in the town
and surrounding areas. The intention is to co-ordinate efforts,
engage with local people, improve access to facilities, and maximise
opportunities for people to take part in sport.
Town Clerk, Hilary Elias, explained, “We expect a good many people to attend,
and to enable people to contribute we anticipate initial presentations, followed
by group work and subsequent feedback. We hope to gain a better understanding
of local sporting needs, consider the need for new and improved facilities, and
develop some sort of local sports forum, network or working group which will
take matters forward. We expect a lively debate as there are a number of
sporting organisations within the town who are keen to see their ideas promoted. We
would be disappointed if local clubs and organisations did not take this opportunity
to express their views, but of course there will need to be a rational appraisal
of what is possible, and provides best value for money for the town.
Any group tasked with developing ideas after the meeting would also be expected
to develop an achievable action plan”.
If you would like to attend you would be most welcome.
Flowering
support for the Big 'C' Appeal
Connaught Hall, Attleborough
was packed for a charity flower demonstration hosted by Breckland
and Gt Ellingham Flower Clubs.
The stage was filled with
thirty season arrangements, which were later raffled, and
at the end of the evening the four demonstrators - Ann Norris
and Brenda Tubb from Gt Ellingham and Christing Hewson and
Joy Tunmore from Breckland were able to present cheques for £1282.50
to Mrs Ann
Dent for the Big 'C' Appeal and Mrs Maggie Roe for Macmillan
Cancer Support.
Many thanks to everyone who donated or sponsored the raffle and
wonderful prizes for the tombola, also all those who gave their
time and help to make this such a successful event.

Attleborough Christmas
Carnival
The afternoon was an outstanding success and goes
to show again, the tremendous community spirit that is evident
in Attleborough. This Christmas, after a very wet morning,
Attleborough celebrated the switching on of the Town Lights
in such outstanding style that even the sun came out for
a short time. The streets of Attleborough were lined
with stalls and funfair, the halls filled with craft and
song. Rev Michael Asbitt blessed the xmas tree and
our local celebrity, Dr Leach, switched on the 30,000 lights
to set the town alight in one of the best displays Attleborough
has ever seen and the Star alight on top of St Mary’s
Church and the church lit in faint colours was the icing
on the cake.
Gill, John and Karen would like to thank in
particular Claire, Sam, Gary, Kate and Larry for their non
stop support and work throughout the planning and preparation
of the event and on the day. Thanks also to Alan, Geoff,
Chris, Neil, Richard and David who joined us in the rain
at 6 am on the morning until the clean up conclusion at 8pm. We
would also like to thank the police for supporting us throughout
the day and adding to the smooth running and relaxed friendly
atmosphere that has become typical for this event. The
afternoon was compered as professionally as always by our
very own Graham Smith. We would also like to thank
Vera Dale, our mayor, and her Town Hall team for their total
support throughout and of course Avril and Geoff for organising
and distribution of the beautiful display of lights around
the town.
Without the support that was given by the many
businesses around the area we could not have put on this
event. For
this we are immensely grateful and would like to thank them
on behalf of the people of Attleborough:
We would like to
thank Donna Kissinger who as the main sponsor of the day
assisted in many ways and provided the transport for Father
Christmas to arrive in style at his magical grotto provided
by Ridgeons and erected and decorated by Claire, Sam and
David of Nuts n bolts. He was accompanied by
his two reindeer Comet and Vixen sponsored by St Lukes Hospital
and Thing me bobs. There was music and events for all
ages including; the Hellesdon & Sprowston Brass Band,
The Rig a jig jig folk group, Livewire Opera Company sponsored
by Norwich and Peterborough Building Society, Rosedale and
Living Property and the primary and junior school choirs.
Another attraction was the Ice Rink sponsored by RJ Holbrook,
Attleborough Commercial Vehicles and RJ Bartram & Son. May
Gurney, Star Transport, Orchard Motors, Norwich Sunblinds
and Breckland Sewing Centre sponsored the insurance and other
essential costs.
Merry Christmas from
John & Gill Hastie, Karen Pettitt
