Thought for the Month
“The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil” 1 Timothy 6.10
GREED!
Money in itself is neutral: it can fund cancer research or nuclear weapons. The choice is man’s responsibility. The love of money, on the other hand, holds great spiritual dangers, for it leads to many sins against God and humanity. Greediness for wealth inevitably puts self at the centre, potentially doing great harm to our fellow men and women. Think of those who manipulate millions for themselves on the Stock Exchange only for others to lose their jobs and homes when financial meltdown comes. Think of those who, greedy for gain, peddle drugs to the young and vulnerable, exploit men, women and children in abusive and sordid slavery or, as corrupt Third World politicians, siphon off money for their own use to the deadly detriment of starving fellow countrymen, women and children.
The truth is that naturally all of us put self first. Because of humankind’s original rebellion against God their Maker, each of us has a built-in selfishness. How do we counter this deeply rooted spiritual ill? We need a total change of heart, turning back to God our Maker in true sorrow for our lack of love for Him and our neighbours. Jesus came to show us the way, but the leaders of his day, greedy for power and the wealth that comes with it, killed Him. It seemed as though greed had triumphed over God’s goodness and generosity. However, God was not defeated. He raised Jesus to life, a powerful life that we can share in, giving us a totally different motivation – the love and service to God and all those around us. On the final day of reckoning before God, we shall have to give an account of how we lived our lives, how we used our money, how we treated others. Are we ready for that Final Examination at the end of time? Michael Gooday

Christ Community Church (one of the Newfrontiers group of churches) has been launched in Attleborough to present the good news about Jesus Christ to all in our town and the surrounding area
